Avenal State Prison of California is a low-medium security prison designed to “provide for the control, care and treatment of those inmates committed to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation by the courts” (mission statement). The facility, opened in 1987, was designed to house 2,320 inmates over an area of 640 acres.
